At Home Tips for Encouraging Reading

Reading is the basis for all learning.  By promoting good reading habits at home, parents can help instill good learning qualities that will help their child succeed at school.

1.  Set an example - let your child or teenager see you read books, newspapers or magazines.

2.  Create a reading environment - Create a reading environment by setting aside quiet reading time without the radio, television or
video games.  Set a daily routine for your child to read independently.  With younger children, read to them or take turns reading.

3.  Have the right materials - have books or subscribe to a magazine.  Regular trips to the public library also promotes an interest in
reading.  Allow your child to choose what interests them.

4.  Ask about reading:  ask your child about what they are reading.  Talking about what your children have read helps them to better
     understand what they have read.

5.  Separate from routine reading time ...  buy games that involve reading.
