Dear Gorham Community,
We hope your February break was healthy and wise. We can't decide if we should be disappointed not to have snow or to be able to just go with the early spring! Did you watch the Olympics? The K-5 Transition Team has met several times since our last letter to you and following is the work we accomplished.
In December, we looked at the current number of students and staffing needed to accommodate them in each of these areas: Special Ed, art, music, PE, library, and nursing. We began the conversations about attendance areas with Norm Justice, Director of Facilities and Transportation. We met with Dennis Crowe, Director of Technology, for an update on the 4-year plan. The new school will be better equipped, but he will continue to work toward equity for the other two schools.
We have begun our work on staff selection for the three K-5 schools by meeting with each teacher who wanted to do so. Staff will know where they will be working later this spring while administrators will be selected for each building in the fall by the Superintendent. The goal is to have a balanced staff in each building.
In February, the Team met with Cindy Hazelton, Recreation Director for the Town of Gorham, and discussed the impact of converting to three K-5 schools on future recreation programs.
That's all for now. Let's hope the snow (when it finally comes) will be deep enough to play in but short lived!
Respectfully,
The K-5 Transition Team
