K-5 Transition
Update
October  2007

Dear District Staff,

We are actively beginning the journey toward three K-5 schools and would like to keep you informed on the progress. First let's begin with a bit of history.

Discussions about a new school for the White Rock area began several years ago. At that time the concept of three K-5 'neighborhood' schools developed. Following several months of meetings with teachers, parents, School Committee members, architect, and Superintendent Mike Moore, a School Committee decision to do this work was made in April 2001. Once the new school was built, the transition could take place.

The rationale for this project is as follows:

  • The concept of neighborhood schools would be strengthened.
  • Transitions for students from one school to another would be minimized in their journey K-12.
  • Schools would be large enough for program supports yet small enough to foster a strong sense of community.
  • Schools/programs would be created with enough continuity and comprehension to meet student needs.
  • Families and children would be able to develop solid relationships with school personnel over a longer period of time.
  • This is also a way to resolve the overcrowding of our present school facilities.

The new school in the White Rock area will be completed by fall of 2010. That is only three and a half years away! The K-5 Transition Team of Ronnie Hanson, Katie Milliken, Karen Rumery, Brian Porter, Jane Esty, Margaret Evans, Brad Smith, Dennis Libby, and Polly Brann has met twice already and plans to meet twice a month throughout the process.

We have developed a framework in which we have listed all the areas to be considered and sorted them into phases and years: Preparation: 2007/ 2007-08; Transfer: 2008-09; Induction: 2009-10; and Consolidation: 2010-11 / 2011-12. We are currently focusing on the Preparation year items as well as developing a communication plan for staff, parents and community, School Committee, and students. You'll be hearing from us again soon!

Respectfully,
The K-5 Transition Team
