Church Steeple

A steeple or spire was added in 1848 and the side windows were enlarged.

Hon. Toppan Robie installed a clock as a gift in 1868 valued at $550.00. Toppan Robie was a wealthy merchant in Gorham. His son Frederick Robie was the governor of Maine from 1883-1887

Why do you suppose they had a clock and bell in the church tower?

People did not have watches

The bell called people to church

The ringing was used as a fire alarm or other emergencies. It called people from all over town if people were in trouble.

Today, people still listen to the bell at celebrations or when someone dies.
